I feel as the mood of this excerpt is sad and shocking, because it says "he had not married until he was invalided out of the war", "(wife) had died of pneumonia", and "no one expected her to die" These reasons are enough to indicate to me, that this excerpt is sad and shocking. The Major was waiting until his enlistment was up to marry his wife, but then suddenly she died of an pneumonia.
