Explain how organisms produced through sexual reproduction differ from those produced by asexual reproduction. Discuss what the advantages or disadvantages might be for each.

Answer :

An advantage for Asexual reproduction usually allows the process of gestation to happen very quickly, not like us humans having a 9 month gestation period.

In sexual reproduction, two parents are involved and the combining of male and female gametes takes place at the time of fertilization. The offspring produced contains an amalgamation of the genes from both the parents, thus, they are different from the parents, and each other. While only one parent is involved in asexual reproduction. The offspring produced are the clones of the parent and even resemble each other.

Some of the advantages of sexual reproduction are:

Sexual reproduction generates genetic variation in the offspring.

• If a disease occurs it is less likely to influence all the members of the population

• The species possess the tendency to adapt to novel changes in the environment due to variation.

Some of the disadvantages of sexual reproduction are:

• More time and energy are used.

• Two individuals are required

Some of the advantages of asexual reproduction:

• Only one parent is required.

• It takes place quickly than sexual reproduction

• The increase of the population takes place briskly in favorable conditions.

Some of the disadvantages of asexual reproduction are:

It does not result in genetic variation

• The disease may influence all the individuals of the population

• The species may only be suited to one habitat.

Thus, it is clear that sexual reproduction is more advantageous than asexual reproduction in terms of survival and variability.
