From this quotation, I interpreted a sense of must. As though, I must be happy because as a person on this earth, everything belongs to us. I also interpreted that in this quotation, that we as people, have no reason to be unhappy because we are claiming what is on this earth as our own and should be the reason we are happy. I think the author wrote this to try to make sense of one's ideology of how happiness is based off of the materialistic objects we claim.
